The Asian American and Pacific Islander Undergraduate Association (abbreviated APIUA) was formed in 2008 by members of the Asian Pacific Coalition in order to address a need for a cohesive student voice in the Asian American Studies Department. Although originally, APC had created the position of Academic Affairs Coordinator to serve as a student representative to the Department, APC’s shifting role to become the voice of all AAPI students on campus made it necessary to create a separate organization to work with the Department due to the its growing involvement in spaces outside of the Asian American Studies Department and Center. As a result, APIUA was formed, with APC’s Academic Affairs Coordinator serving as its chair.
Whereas APIUA serves as the undergraduate student association for Asian American Studies majors and minors, APC serves as the voice for student organizations and students who are invested in these spaces but not necessarily a part of the major or the minor.
